Secure
Server (SSL)
The secure server option implements SSL for a portion of your Web content.
It is included at no additional charge with E-Commerce and Developer accounts,
and is available as an option for Advanced and Webmaster accounts. Lower
account types lack the CGI capability required to take advantage of SSL.
What
is SSL?
SSL,
or Secure Socket Layer, uses public-key encryption to protect all data
exchanged between your Web site and the client, provided the URLs used
refer to the secure section of your site. This is most commonly used to
protect credit card information.
What
URL is used?
Unless
you purchase your own secure certificate,
your secure content will be served from a URL such as:
https://secure.TAISWeb.net/username/
A secure certificate, however, will allow you to use your domain name
with SSL, like this:
https://www.example.com/
Because of negotiation and encryption overhead, connections through SSL
are unavoidably somewhat slower than other connections. For this and other
reasons, we do not recommend that you serve your entire site through SSL.
It is more reasonable to only use SSL for receiving sensitive information
from visitors.
How
Much Does it Cost?
Secure
Server is included at no additional charge with the Developer and E-Commerce
accounts. As an option for the Webmaster and Advanced accounts, there
is a $20 setup fee and $10/month thereafter.
Advantages
of Having a Secure Certificate
Increases confidence of your site visitors.
Indicates that your site is associated with the company on the certificate,
as verified by Verisign/Thawte.
Increases legitimacy of your site.
Allows you to easily move to another service, or to upgrade your service
to our QuickServe dedicated servers.
